Creating a Technology Vision based in Research: EDUC 5373 Blog 3

This week in EDUC 5373, our class reviewed research articles that were intended to guide us toward creating a shared vision for technology access and use in our districts. The research discussed the role of technology in education and how we can effectively integrate it to enhance student learning. Today, I’d like to share thoughts I had from the provided research that can help us build a strong Technology Vision, specifically when considering the challenges of digital inequity.
In one of the provided research articles, Crompton (2023) introduces the ISTE Educator Standards as a helpful guide for teachers to use technology effectively. The study shows that when teachers follow these standards, students often learn more effieciently. Crompton highlights two key strategies. One is improving understanding and achievement with technology. Teachers can use it to deepen students' understanding and boost their academic success. The second is enhancing motivation and engagement. Technology can make learning more enjoyable and engaging for students.
These insights are crucial when developing our Technology Vision. By focusing on evidence-based strategies, we can be sure that our vision provides access to meaningful, technology-enhanced learning experiences for all our students, which addresses the second-level digital divide (using technology to enhance education, not just access to technology).
In the second research article, Gonzales (2019) points out challenges school leaders face in providing each student with a device like a laptop or tablet. Issues include budgeting, maintaining the program over time, and aligning teaching goals with what teachers can accomplish. To address these challenges in our Technology Vision, we should focus on financial planning, sustainability, and student-centered learning. The visions should include clear financial planning and have strategies to maintain funding and long-term support for 1:1 initiatives. It should also establish goals prioritizing student-centered learning, aligning with the instructional plan for 1:1 laptop use.
Additionally, the ISTE Education Leader Standards provide frameworks for helping school leaders to effectively lead and manage technology integration, improve teaching methods and learning through technology, and build educators' technological skills. We can utilize the ISTE Standards for Students, Educators, and Education Leaders to address digital inequity. These standards guide educators in using technology to support student learning, improve outcomes, and promote responsible digital behavior.
Finally, the ISTE Essential Conditions offer a framework to create a vision for technology use. They ensure equitable access, support professional development, implement effective policies, and encourage teamwork among leaders. By combining insights from Crompton (2023) and Gonzales (2019) with ISTE Standards and Essential Conditions, we can develop an effective and fair Technology Vision. This vision will focus on integrating technology in a way that truly enhances learning. It will also address challenges of 1:1 programs through careful planning and continuous support, aiming for effective, long-term use. The end goal is to provide all students with meaningful, technologically rich learning opportunities, embedding digital equality into our educational practices and objectives.

Nice blog! This is a really clear and concise summary of Crompton's research and the impact of ISTE Educator Standards. You highlighted many important strategies such as improving student achievement and enhancing engagement. It is powerful to see how when technology is used effectively, it can truly benefit student learning. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteI love how simple you made Crompton's research seem through your analysis. You covered all of the important aspects while making it easier to understand. I definitely agree with your end goal as I feel most of us that are in this class will.
